Connect the router
Connect the modem or internet source to the router WAN/Internet port. Connect the setup computer to a LAN port using Ethernet.
Overview
This guide covers a basic and safe router setup for a computer laboratory. Menu names may differ depending on the router model.
Step-by-step procedure
Open the router administration page
Open a browser and enter the router gateway address shown on its label or manual, commonly 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
Sign in safely
Use the authorized administrator credentials. Change the default administrator password when permitted and store it securely.
Configure the internet connection
Use the connection type supplied by the internet provider, such as Dynamic IP/DHCP, PPPoE, or Static IP.
Set the local network and DHCP
Keep DHCP enabled for automatic addressing unless the school network requires a planned static configuration.
Configure Wi-Fi
Set a recognizable network name, choose WPA2 or WPA3 security when available, and create a strong Wi-Fi password.
Save and restart
Apply the changes and allow the router to restart. Reconnect using the updated settings.
Verify the connection
Check that connected computers receive an IP address and can access both the router and the internet.
Checks and reminders
- Do not reset a working school router without authorization.
- Avoid using student names, room passwords, or personal information in the Wi-Fi name.
- Keep router firmware updated using the manufacturer-approved process.
