Step 1 – Inspect Stored Equipment
Examine all computer equipment that has been in storage. Check for visible signs of dust, physical damage, missing components, or corrosion before attempting to use the equipment.
This guide explains how to inspect, clean, test, and prepare computer hardware before setting up a computer laboratory. Proper inspection helps identify working equipment, prevent hardware failures, and ensure a reliable laboratory installation.
Important Note: Computer equipment that has been stored for a long period should always be inspected before use. Dust, damaged cables, and faulty components may affect performance and should be identified before installation.
Examine all computer equipment that has been in storage. Check for visible signs of dust, physical damage, missing components, or corrosion before attempting to use the equipment.
Before connecting any computer, inspect the UPS units and power conditioners. Verify that they are functioning correctly and supplying the appropriate voltage for safe operation.
Open the system unit using the appropriate screwdriver and remove accumulated dust from the internal components. Keeping the hardware clean improves airflow and helps prevent overheating.
Check every power cable, monitor cable, keyboard cable, mouse cable, and network cable for damaged insulation, bent connectors, or loose wiring. Replace any cable that is found to be defective.
Assemble one or two complete computer systems using the available components. Test each computer to determine which parts are working properly before setting up the entire laboratory.
Organize the equipment into working and non-working groups. Prioritize installing the working computers first so that the laboratory can become operational while faulty units are repaired.
If available, use DVI monitor connections instead of VGA because they generally provide better display quality.
Connect all laboratory computers to a network switch to simplify communication between systems and support laboratory activities such as screen sharing and file transfers.
