Extending a Laboratory Network

Overview

This guide explains how to add more wired ports with a switch or improve wireless coverage using a properly configured access point.

Count the additional devices, measure cable routes, and choose a safe location with ventilation and nearby power.

Use a network switch for more wired ports. Use a dedicated access point for stronger wireless coverage.

Run an Ethernet cable from a router LAN port to the switch or access point uplink/LAN port.

Connect each workstation to the switch using tested Ethernet cables and label both ends.

Set the access point to AP or bridge mode where available. Avoid enabling a second DHCP server on the same network.

Use cable ties, trays, or clips without bending cables sharply or placing network cables beside unsafe power connections.

Confirm that the power and link/activity lights appear on the router, switch, access point, and computers.

Verify that each computer receives an address, reaches the gateway, and accesses required local and internet services.

Do not create loops by connecting two switch ports back into the same network path.
Use a gigabit switch where the computers and cabling support it.
Place access points away from thick walls, metal cabinets, and strong electrical interference.
