Creating and Testing an Ethernet Cable

Step 1 – Prepare the Tools and Materials

Gather a UTP cable, two RJ45 connectors, a crimping tool, cable stripper or cutter, and a network cable tester.

Tool(s): UTP cable, RJ45 connectors, crimping tool, cable stripper or cutter, and cable tester.

Step 2 – Measure and Cut the Cable

Measure the required cable length and leave a small allowance before cutting it cleanly.

Tool(s): Measuring tape or ruler, cable cutter, or the cutter built into the crimping tool.

Important Note: Avoid cutting the cable to the exact required length. Leave a little extra cable so that if one connector is wired incorrectly or fails the cable test, you can simply remove the faulty connector and recrimp a new RJ45 connector instead of replacing the entire cable.

Step 3 – Remove the Outer Jacket

Strip approximately 2–3 cm of the outer jacket without damaging the smaller wires inside.

Tool(s): Cable stripper or the stripping blade on the crimping tool.

Important Note: Some Ethernet cables contain a plastic spline (cross separator) and a rip cord inside the jacket. Remove and trim both before arranging the wires because they are not inserted into the RJ45 connector.

Step 4 – Untwist and Arrange the Wires

Untwist the wire pairs and arrange them according to the T568B wiring standard.

Tool(s): None (use your hands).

5. White-Blue
6. Green
7. White-Brown
8. Brown

Step 5 – Straighten and Trim the Wires

Straighten the wires while keeping them in the correct order, then trim the ends evenly so they are all the same length.

Tool(s): Cable cutter or the cutter built into the crimping tool.

Step 6 – Insert the Wires into the RJ45 Connector

Hold the RJ45 connector with the clip facing away from you and carefully insert the wires until they reach the front of the connector. Check that the wire order has not changed.

Step 7 – Crimp the Connector

Place the RJ45 connector into the crimping tool and squeeze the handles firmly until the connector is securely attached. Repeat the same T568B wiring arrangement on the other end.

Tool(s): Crimping tool.

Step 8 – Test the Cable

Connect both ends of the cable to a network cable tester. Lights 1 through 8 should appear in the correct sequence on both the main unit and the remote unit.

Tool(s): Network cable tester.

If the tester shows an open, short, crossed, or incorrect wire, inspect the cable and recrimp the affected connector before testing again.
